About

- Julian Sprung
After seeing the blogs of coworkers and fellow hobbyists, I was inspired to create a blog that would track my progress as I built a 60 gallon reef aquarium. My blog was launched as Chris's 60-Gallon Reef Build. It was cleverly themed (so I thought) with a western feel, complete with a Clownfish wearing a cowboy hat. The initial posts were about the start of my aquarium, and as interest in my updates grew I updated my site to have a more user friendly feel. My interest in blogging grew, and it was suggested that I go "professional" and register a domain. Chromis' Reef was registered as ChromisReef.com in May 2011.

There are many other websites/blogs that cover the marine aquarium industry, and I'll leave the inside scoops to the experts. The main topic of Chromis' Reef is my reef tank and the my trials and experiences along the way, but product reviews and other editorial information (ramblings) will be posted from time to time. Although I have worked in the pet industry for many years, I am still just another hobbyist and will present all information from the point of view of "a hobbyist". Most of what I post here is opinion and from personal experience, and not necessarily recommended for your aquarium.

About The Blogger:
My name is Chris, but my friends shortened and merged my name to become "Chromie". This was quickly associated with the little reef fish, the Blue/Green Chromis (Chromis viridis). And so my nickname carried on...

I have worked in the pet retail industry for over eight years. I have cared for thousands of pets from fish to reptiles and everything in between. As such, it is safe to say I am fairly comfortable around most pets. My experience with pets has given me a respect for animals, and I have seen both the good side and downside of the industry. Even with experience with animals and fish, I  still consider myself just another hobbyist and I seem to learn something new every day.

I strongly promote and practice responsible pet care; I am an advocate of researching an animal before making a commitment. Too many times have I been on the other end of trying to convince someone NOT to take home a red-eared slider, or heard the argument of "it's just a fish, who cares if it dies..." There are many great books, blogs, online forums, clubs, and other great resources dedicated to hobby awareness and education. I encourage everyone to keep learning!

I thank you for visiting my blog and reading about my reef tank, and I hope this blog helps you in your journey.
